This page describes how to create a new group within the GeoChronos portal.
- To create a new group, mouse over the Tools drop down menu in the navigation bar. Select Groups from the list of Tools. You will be redirected to the Groups plugin, specifically you will be shown a list of groups that you manage.
- To create a new group, select "Create a new group" from the menu options display on the left hand side of the screen.
- You will be presented with the following form to fill out:

- If you would like to upload an image/icon for your group, click the "Browse" button and select an image from your hard drive.
- Choose a descriptive name that will help people understand the purpose of your group
- The remaining fields should be filled out to give users of the system as much information as possible about the group you are creating. This information will be publicly accessible, so do not include information here that you would prefer to keep private. This information is to provide other users of the system enough information to know whether or not they would like to join your group.
- Pay close attention to the group membership option. If you create a group with public membership, anyone will be able to join the group. If you create a group with private membership, then only people who have been invited to the group will be able to join. In other words, you as the group creator control who can access the group.
- The group page itself is public but only content for which the user has access privileges to can be viewed. The description info provided when the group is created is public. The message board is public, but only writeable by the group. Discussions, pages, files, events, etc. can only be added/modified by group members, but can be viewed according to access privileges specified when the content was created.
- When a group is created with private membership it will often be the case that users will want to set the access control for any content they add to the group to be specifically the group they are adding it to. See "Managing access to content" for more on this.
